Westpoint Shopping Centre – Carpark Upgrade

The Westpoint Shopping Centre, Carpark Upgrade Project consisted of the full remediation and upgrade of the existing Carpark on the corner of Alpha and Balmoral Street.

Minor structural issues identified mid-2018 due to two (2) columns failing within the Carpark reaching its end-of-life (approx. 50 years) along with bad structural detailing when built contributed to the issues.

Due to the potential structural risk to the public QIC made the decision to close the carpark August 2018 losing approx. 50% of the Centre’s carparking serving the Shopping Centre. CC were engaged under a Design & Construct (D&C) contract with a cost-plus arrangement to the trades with the uncertainty of the scope required to complete the project.

The remediation involved the complete structural upgrade to 400+ columns including concrete jackets to each column, steel beams to the underside of slabs to bring the carpark loading up to Building Code of Australia (BCA) compliance and re-grouting of in slab Post Tensioning (PT) tendons with various ducts found un-grouted and un-stressed. CC successfully handed over Block 1 of the Carpark 26 August 2019 to provide approx. 1,425 carparks back to the Centre easing much of the pressure to QIC and Block 2 handed over 30 October 2019 with the remaining carparks.
